Computer science
students from the University have delivered a second batch of computers
to local children in need as(NC4K).
Earlier this month
three Wollongong
University students from the NC4K project group delivered 8 Apple Macs
to the Nowra East Primary school.
The school has 500 students and only 6 Apple Macs to use for group studies.
When Pippa Horton,
Teacher/Librarian at the school, heard a radio interview about NC4K offering
to help the community; she rang to ask if there were any spare computers
available for her school.
NC4K project members
were able to refurbish 8 Apple Macs with Claris Works, Acrobat and other
software utilities for the school.
These computers will
be used in conjunction with the existing school computers to conduct literary
tests for the Year 6 students.
Pippa Horton said
that with these extra computers the groups could be split into two smaller
groups; one to use the Internet and the other to use Word processing and
Spreadsheet facilities. The groups could then be rotated between the Internet
and the stand-alone machines.
Patrick Hilton said
the delivery of the computers had gone well.
" We had used
two vehicles because of the number of Apples, a Scanner and an Apple Printer,
we were limited to only three group members for this delivery".
Pippa Horton said
that the principal was extremely pleased to receive the Apple Macs and
looks forward to having all the classes make use of them.
