A University of Wollongong
student studying in Singapore has been honoured as a finalist in the prestigious
Lee Kwan Yew Global Business Plan competition.
Felix Ng, studying
for his Master of International Business degree through UOW's Graduate
School of Business and Professional Development at Auston College in Singapore,
was the leader of a two-man team that was one of six finalists in a competition
that drew entries from all over the world vying for the $US68,000 prizemoney.
Felix and his team-mate
from the National University of Singapore won $US5000 for their business
plan for the manufacture and marketing of carbon nanomaterial, a carbon
structure used in the production of drugs, lubricants and additives.
The gruelling three-stage
contest required contestants to produce a 2000-word preliminary business
plan. If they passed through that stage they then had to produce a 5000-word
business plan. The final stage was a formal presentation to the judging
panel.
The competition was
won by a team from the University of Wisconsin in the United States. The
other finalists were Purdue University from the US, the University of
Manitoba in Canada, Institut Teknologi in Bandung, Indonesia, Nanyang
Technological University in Singapore, and the University of Wollongong/National
University of Singapore entry.
Felix, who is halfway
through his MIB with UOW, said his entry was inspired by the desire to
build a high-technology start-up from ground zero.
