Director of the Intelligent Polymer Research Institute, Professor Gordon
Wallace, left, is pictured with Dr Jie Ding who discovered a special polymer
during her PhD studies - one that specifically attracts gold from solution
at very low levels and is capable of uptaking gold to five times its own
weight. Rio Tinto have patented the discovery and are now carrying out
trials in Papua New Guinea; and Dr Anton Dominis who thesis focused on
the investigation of polyaniline emeraldine salts for the protection of
plain carbon steel.
