Students seek outdated computers for the needy

16-August-2002

The Smith Family was the recent recipient of the first batch of
computers. Pictured with the boxes ready for the dispatch are third year
IT students (from left): Stephen Boger, Peter Bresser and Patrick
Hilton.

Computer science students from the University of Wollongong are
appealing to local businesses to consider recycling their old, outdated
computers instead of throwing them in the rubbish.

The students are part of a community-based project managed by the
University's School of Information Technology and Computer Science,
supervised by Professor Peter Croll and Mrs Anne Fuller, called New
Computers For Kids (NC4K).

NC4K involves the students restoring and repairing the old computers and
distributing them to children in need.

"We aim to enable all children an equal chance at mastering essential
computer skills before entering high school by recycling redundant
computers. We also aim to reduce the environmental impact of discarded
IT equipment and provide a method for future generations to reduce
environmental damage," project member Karen Williams said.
