As the Australian electorate prepared to go to the polls in a largely tax-driven election, delegates to an international workshop noted the finer points of tax in the global electronic age.
Delegates from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) nations attended a workshop at the University of Wollongong on October 1- 2, to discuss emerging issues in electronic commerce, including tax. The University of Wollongong hosted the event on behalf of APEC, Human Resource Development in Industrial Technology Network (HURDIT) and AusAID.
General manager (International) of the National Office of Information Economy Australia, Tom Dale, delivered the keynote address to more than 100 delegates.
Speakers included Chair of Computing and IT at the University of Western Sydney, Professor Vijay Varadharajan; Director General, Department of Information Technology PR China, Ms Song Ling; Dr Gordon Hughes, of Blake, Dawson and Walden, Melbourne; Associate Professor Joseph Davis, of UOWs Department of Business Systems and Leith Felton-Taylor, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; Industry presenters include CamTech, St George Bank and Optus.
The workshop examined the major issues arising from doing business on the internet and the world wide web, such as security, privacy, programming and finance.
In addition, the workshop identified and discussed major obstacles and strategies to increase education and training in electronic commerce in the Asia Pacific region. Senior officials, E- business managers and scholars from Australia, China Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines attended.
The national launch of Nutrition Week will be held jointly in Sydney by the Australian Nutrition Foundation, the Australian and New Zealand Food Authority and the Federation of Australian Nutrition Organisations.
This year the launch, "Adding life to your years", will be held at the Powerhouse Museum on Monday 12 October from 6 to 9pm. Nutrition Week runs from 12 to 18 October.
Speakers at the launch will include Professor Mark Wahlquist, Professor of Medicine at Monash University and Australian Nutrition Foundation Chair; along with Ms Rita Erlich, foodwriter for The Australian.
