Fels talk explores the future of competition law
Sep 12, 2003
Former head of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Alan Fels kept the focus on competition during his visit to the University this week. The new Dean of the Australian and New Zealand School of Government delivered the University's inaugural Economic and Social Policy Lecture on "The Future of Competitive Law". During his speech, Professor Fels said that competition law really took off in 1990 and now the momentum needs to be sustained despite big business pressures to water it down. Professor Fels taught at Monash University before becoming Chairman of the Prices Surveillance Authority in 1989, adding the job of Chairman of the Trade Practices Commission in 1991. The two organisations were combined to form the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in 1995. The School of Economics and Information Systems plans to hold a major public lecture annually beginning with the lecture by Professor Fels. The Australian and New Zealand School of Government, based in Melbourne, is a joint initiative of the Australian and New Zealand Governments and 10 universities and business schools. It provides postgraduate education for emerging leaders and executives in the public and government sectors.
