Bert Halpern Public Lecture for 2003

Oct 29, 2003

The Department of Chemistry held the 2003 Bert Halpern Public Lecture on 21 October with Professor David Black from the School of Chemistry at the University of New South Wales as this year's presenter. His lecture was entitled "Living with Indoles".

The annual lecture is presented by a distinguished visiting scientist on a subject in Chemistry or Biochemistry. It honours the memory of Bert Halpern, the Foundation Professor of Chemistry at the University of Wollongong from 1970-1980. In recognition of his contributions to science, he was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1978.

Professor Black was born in Wollongong in 1938 and after working at Monash University from 1965-1982 was appointed to the Chair of Organic Chemistry at UNSW in 1983.

He has won the Rennie Medal (1970), the H.G.Smith Medal (1993) and the A.J.Birch Medal (2003) of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI). In 1990, Professor Black was the Liverside Lecturer of the Royal Society of New South Wales and also the Royal Society of Chemistry lecturer. He was President of the RACI in 1998, and was Chair of the National Committee for Chemistry from 1999-2003.

Professor Black has recently been elected Secretary General of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry from 2004-2007.
