University hosts science education program for school kids

The University of Wollongong this week hosted the three-day Siemens Science Experience program for students entering Year 10 in 2004.

This science education program is organised by the Science Schools Foundation Inc., and nationally sponsored by Siemens Ltd and IT skills Hub.

It aims to introduce students to as many aspects of science, engineering and technology studies at the University as are possible within the three days, with the hope that they will continue these studies in upper secondary years at university.

Rotary clubs are also strong supporters of the program through sponsoring students and arranging accommodation.

The University of Wollongong Siemens Science Experience was held from January 13th-15th.

The program includes activities such as Cool Physics - measuring the temperature of absolute zero, Chemistry Chaos - a crazy concoction of chemical creations, Nanotechnology, Maggots and Murder (forensic science) and visits to the Science Centre and Planetarium and Blue Scope Steel.

The local director is the Faculty of Science's Schools Liaison Officer, Tim Cartwright.

With students travelling from as far as Broken Hill, Sydney and Narooma, this is an excellent opportunity for students to meet and interact with other interested science students.
