Illawarra Mercury offers $20,000 for Work Integrated Learning Scholarships

Sep 02, 2004

The Illawarra Mercury is sponsoring two new Work Integrated Learning Scholarships for regional Year 12 students worth almost $20,000 that carry assured temporary work placements of six to eight weeks with The Mercury newspaper.

The scholarships are for one year and worth $9,600 each with applications closing on September 24 2004.

The scholarships are for students applying for a Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies), Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies (Advertising and Marketing), Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies (Journalism), Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) or Bachelor of Business Administration.

They are only for students who will complete their HSC this year at a high school in the region as far north as Bulli and as far south as (and including) Nowra.

The Mercury work experience component would take place for six to eight weeks over summer.

“We want to provide scholarships and work experience to talented students from our region and at the same time forge a closer relationship with the University,” according to the Managing Editor of the Illawarra Mercury, Mr Peter Christopher.

The Dean of Arts, Professor Andrew Wells, said he was very excited by this initiative as it symbolises a close and growing relationship between the two faculties of Arts and Commerce.

Commerce Dean, Professor John Glynn, said that given UOW’s national and international standing it was critically important to maintain regional links and it could be no better represented than by the University’s relationship with The Illawarra Mercury.

He concurred with Professor Wells that it also symbolised the way in which two faculties worked closely together to bring innovative programs to students in the region.

Scholarship applications are available through the University of Wollongong by contacting 1300 367 869.

Further information can be obtained by contacting UOW’s Scholarship and Development Co-ordinator, Mr Patrick O’Connor, on 4221 3073.
