University's strong ties to new Wollongong Symphony Orchestra
Oct 15, 2004
The University of Wollongong is playing a pivotal role behind the establishment of the new Wollongong Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra's first concert on Saturday 30 October will feature a 100 voice choir and 70 of Australia's best musicians. Trumpeter James Morrison will perform in the Koehne High Art for Jazz Trumpet and Orchestra which has been especially written for him. The massed choir consists of singers from Illawarra schools, the University of Wollongong and the Conservatorium. Students from the Faculty of Creative Arts are also assisting with graphic design work for promotional material linked to the new orchestra. The University of Wollongong is one of the major sponsors of the orchestra. Currently the only professional music ensembles that include Wollongong as part of their regular subscription concerts are the Australian Chamber Orchestra and The Song Company. Professional musicians on staff at the Conservatorium have agreed to offer their expertise in the initial phases of the orchestra's development. These musicians include Carlos Alvarado, former conductor of the Columbian Symphony Orchestra and Alexandra Loukianova, who has played with the Tchaikovsky Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and was Concert Master for the Columbian Symphony Orchestra. The premiere performance will be at The Auditorium, St Mary's College, Harbour Street, Wollongong, at 7.30pm on Saturday 30 October. Tickets for the premiere concert are now on sale at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, 32 Burelli Street, Wollongong, phone 4226 3366 or visit IPAC
