Oct 15, 2004

The University of Wollongong Women’s Touch and Soccer team have again proven their outstanding skills at Australia’s largest annual multi-sport event - the 2004 Australian University Games which were held in Perth from September 26 to October 1.

The Touch Team remained undefeated, taking out the gold medal against Murdoch University 3-1. The team’s week of sporting achievements was topped off with six players being selected for the Australian University Green and Gold Merit Team. These team members were Laura Robinson, Sarah Dent, Kathryn Collins, Andrea Fristsch, Kellie Drake and Lauren Fleming.

The Women’s Soccer Team also claimed glory for the second consecutive year, with a 1-0 victory over the University of Sydney. The girls were undefeated throughout the competition and members Eliza Jenkins, Renee Shirley, Katrina Dorzack and Leah Carlon were also chosen for the Green and Gold team.

Swimmer Anneke Ray again dominated in the pool winning a fistful of medals, including gold in the 200m Individual Medley.

There were also strong performances from the UOW Women’s Rugby Union Team, who lost several players to injury but gained a silver medal, as did the Men’s Touch team against the University of Newcastle. The UOW Men’s Baseball team won bronze.

Individual athletes Michael Smith (500m Walk) and Amanda Fryer (Women’s Pole Vault) grabbed silver, with Aaron Cooke (Javelin) and Rohan Walker (400m Hurdles) receiving bronze at the track.
