UOW singers to present a colourful and diverse ‘Viva la Song’
Oct 25, 2004
Koori dancers, African and Middle-Eastern drumming, lounge singing and Bulgarian Chanting. Clearly an eclectic and multicultural mix for this year’s Viva La Song, presented by the University of Wollongong’s Sapphire Lounge Singers and the UOW Choir as part of the annual Viva La Gong festival. It was only a few months ago that the UOW choir was urging others to warm up their vocal chords, welcoming seasoned and showered singers to be part of a massed choir for the festival. Now, the group is practised and perfected and are looking forward to the event that last year involved over 100 singers and amazing performances that wowed audiences. President of the Sapphire Lounge Singers and UOW Choir, Sarah Lambert, (who also works as a project manager with CEDIR) said that Viva La Song celebrates the metamorphosis of the Illawarra into the amazing multicultural community that it is today, through song. “The event has been organised by UOW’s Lounge Singers and Choir, and performances are from a smorgasbord of Wollongong’s finest community choirs singing largely secular world and contemporary music,” she said. Audiences can also expect a touch of Balkan magic from special guests ‘Pippero’. “Pippero are an acapella trio and are the cream of Sydney’s Bulgarian Martenitsa choir. They have been delighting world/folk/jazz/fusion audiences at festivals and concerts as a solo group and as part of larger singing groups.” When: Wednesday 27 October at 7.30pm Where: Wollongong Town Hall Cost: Tickets are $10 and are available at Redback Records (lower Crown St Mall) and at the door on the night For further information: contact Sarah Lambert on (02) 4221 5248 -RP
