UOW academic receives distinguished 'Fellow' elevation
Nov 03, 2004
Professor Buddhima Indraratna from the University of Wollongong's Faculty of Engineering was recently elevated to the membership of “Fellow” within the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). This designation is considered one of the most esteemed honours that civil engineers can receive from their peers. To be considered for the grade, Professor Buddhima had to have been a legally registered engineer or land surveyor and have had responsibility spanning at least 10 years in the grade of 'Member'. He also had to be qualified to direct, plan or design engineering works. An ASCE Member may also be awarded “Fellow” grade if he or she has had responsible charge of important industrial business, construction, educational, editorial, research or engineering society activity, requiring the knowledge and background gained from extensive engineering training and experience. In bestowing the grade of “Fellow” on Professor Indraratna, the organisation's Past President, Delon Hampton, said that the work of prominent civil engineers realises a major goal -- to serve as stewards of the public infrastructure and guardians of public health and safety. Founded in 1852, ASCE represents more than 137,000 civil engineers worldwide and is America's oldest national engineering society. -RP
