Members of Australia’s most successful Olympic team come to Wollongong
Nov 10, 2004
The Wollongong community had the chance to meet three of Australia’s most successful Olympic athletes last week (Friday 5 November), when the University of Wollongong Rugby Union Club and KPMG hosted an Olympic Celebration Dinner at the City Beach Function Centre in Wollongong. Special guest speakers included Jana Pittman (Finalist in Women’s 400m Hurdles), Craig Stevens (Finalist in Men’s 1500m Freestyle) and Sarah Ryan (Gold in 4 x 100 Women’s Freestyle Relay). The dinner was attended by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton; Pro Vice-Chancellor (Operations), Professor John Patterson, Vice-Principal (International), Mr James Langridge and a variety of business and community representatives. Prized memorabilia was auctioned on the night including a Grant Hackett hand signed Australian swim cap, a limited edition of 200 signed Kostya Tszyu boxing gloves, a 2004 Qantas Wallaby team photo, a Muhammad Ali signed photo, a Greg Norman signed shark golf ball, a replica of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic torch and an Anzac 11th Battalion photo and WW1 bayonet. Funds raised from the dinner and auction will go towards worthwhile causes such as the UOW Rugby Club’s injured players fund, and UOW scholarships. -RP
