Surf's up . . . on the lawn!
Nov 11, 2004
The University of Wollongong's Duck Pond lawn was transformed into a mini beach this week (Wednesday 10 November) when the Wollongong University Postgraduate Association (WUPA) hosted a free, fun and informative Surf Safety Workshop conducted by the Wollongong City Council Lifeguard Service. The workshop was organised specifically for the benefit of UOW students, particularly those from overseas, who are unfamiliar with surf safety issues. Friends, colleagues and family were also invited to attend. President of WUPA, Mr Jason Hart, said it is very important that international students have some knowledge of safety at the beach and some basic skills. “The workshop was run by local lifeguards and was a positive initiative for international students who are not used to beach culture,” he said. “Australia's beaches can be dangerous and deceptive - we want people to enjoy the beaches, but also be cautious.” WUPA, along with UOW's Office of Community and Partnerships, also helped to establish the 'Victor Yang Memorial Art Prize' in commemoration of postgraduate student and talented artist, “Victor” Yang Sheng An, who tragically drowned while surfing at East Corrimal beach in December 2002. “The workshop was designed to provide some critical information for great swimmers, and for those who can't swim at all. It's essential that everyone is aware of safety and rescue procedures,” Jason said. Also attending the workshop was UOW Japanese student, Mitsuko Nanke (pictured), who has been campaigning to improve lifeguard services in the area and was rescued by a lifeguard at a local beach recently. ***Anyone interested in assisting the Wollongong City Council Lifeguard Service should contact Dave Willdin: dwilldin@wollongong.nsw.gov.au -RP
