Commerce Dean's Scholars welcomed into new study facility
Nov 26, 2004
A new study facility for the University of Wollongong Commerce Dean's Scholars was opened yesterday (Thursday 25 November) by the Commerce Dean, Professor John Glynn. The Commerce Dean's Scholars program provides an enriched educational experience for high-achieving students, who receive a book allowance, individual mentoring from academic staff, paid work experience in the local community and now a special study facility as part of the program's privileges. In return, entry to the program is competitive and students must maintain a distinction average (75%). The degree also encourages the students to continue their studies through to the completion of honours and research degrees. Dean's Scholars complete all requirements for their respective degrees and may be permitted to take accelerated programs after their first session. Current Commerce students can apply for a course transfer to the program after completion of a minimum of 48 credit points at the University of Wollongong. The Faculty of Commerce accepted 26 Scholars into the program in 2004, the first year of its operation. Dean's Scholars Program Coordinator, Associate Professor Joan Rodgers, says this number will continue to grow. “When fully operational there will be 45 Dean's Scholars at various stages of their Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Business Administration,” Professor Rodgers said. “It's a great facility for the students to access and has been opened just in time for the 2004-2005 summer school.” -RP
