Bidding farewell to the gymnasium . . .
Nov 26, 2004
The University of Wollongong's Faculty of Education hosted a “Remembering the Gymnasium” lunch recently (Sunday 14 November) to celebrate the building's contribution to the lives of the many students, staff and community members who have passed through its doors. With the pending demolition of the Education Gymnasium to make way for UOW's graduate medical school, a picnic lunch was held outside the building, bringing together over 50 people from Wollongong, Sydney and as far away as Durras on the South Coast, who were involved with the gym from 1968 through to the present day. Attendees were welcomed by the Dean of Education, Professor Barry Harper and speakers included the Director of Physical and Health Education, Dr Paul Webb and the previous Director and Dean of Education, Professor David Anderson. The Education Gymnasium was one of the original buildings on the site of Wollongong Teachers' College and was built in 1963. Considered 'state of the art' at the time of its establishment, it has served the Wollongong Teacher's College, the Wollongong Institute of Education and finally, the University of Wollongong. Lecturer in the faculty, Ms Ros Westbrook, said that a large number of aspiring students have passed through the gym. “About 300 early childhood students, 6,000 Primary, 3,000 Diploma of Education and 3,00 Physical and Health Education students have all used its facilities,” she said. “University clubs have also regularly used the gym, including the Badminton club which came to the lunch. A variety of community sporting clubs have used it, and it's been the place for a number of UOW workshops and meetings.” A variety of gym and education memorabilia was on display at the lunch and everyone who participated received a certificate of attendance. “It was a great day,” Ms Westbrook said. “It gave everyone an opportunity to come to the gym one last time, celebrate past memories and create a few more.”
Attendees included (as pictured left to right) Gregg Rowland, David Anderson, Jo McLean, Maureen Wright, George Gedge, Pat Anderson, Paul Webb, Yvonne Kerr, Phil Pearson, Kim McKeen, Doug Hearne, Hazel Holmwood, Ros Westbrook, Barry Harper and Tony Okely (sitting).
