Chilean Educational Attaché visits UOW

Mr Maximiliano Jarpa, the new Education Attaché for the Chilean Consulate General, met UOW executives and staff recently to discuss UOW's research strengths and the possibility of research collaboration. Mr Jarpa met with the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Rob Castle and academic staff from the Faculty of Informatics including Associate Professor Carol Alcock and Ms Lois Burgess. He also met the Manager of Research Services, Ms Sharon Hughes and the Head of Student Services, Associate Professor Greg Hampton. Manager of International Public Relations, Ms Kerry Lyon, said that Mr Jarpa was extremely impressed with the University's innovative approach to tertiary teacher training and the academic and English support given to domestic and international students. “During his tour of the campus with myself and Peter Day (Manager of International Recruitment), Mr Jarpa commented on the outstanding facilities and the beauty of the campus,” she said. He said that Wollongong has the highest “quality of life”. Ms Lyon said that Mr Jarpa's visit reflected the importance placed by the Chilean Government on the educational links between Australia and Chile. -RP
