Writing students to launch magazine
May 20, 2005
Sex and murder are arguably the two most enduring themes in literary history, and University of Wollongong Creative Writing students are keeping the tradition alive with their new magazine.
The students will launch TIDE, UOW's only student-produced literary magazine on Friday, May 27.
Bridging the university and the community, TIDE is a collection of poetry, prose and visual work compiled, edited and printed entirely by 3rd Year Creative Writing students.
Student spokesman Xavier Mayes says sex and murder are just some of the themes explored in the magazine.
"Sex and murder are certainly popular themes, but the students' work also explores ideas of self-discovery, love, and the contemplation of life. Basically, TIDE showcases the human condition. . .even if it has to examine the darker sides," he said.
Now in its second year, the independently-funded publication grew out of a course the students undertake as part of their Creative Arts (Creative Writing) degree.
Students have been responsible for all of the magazine's graphics, layout, copy-editing, fundraising and promotion.
"I think this is a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their talents," said lecturer Dr Shady Cosgrove, who runs the course.
"It's valuable experience that will benefit them in their future careers."
TIDE will be launched on the 27th of May in the foyer of the Creative Arts faculty at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. The evening will feature readings and guest speakers. Staff and students of the University are welcome to attend (dress- codes apply).
