Battle of Trafalgar - 200 years on!

Oct 24, 2005

The University of Wollongong joined in the commemoration for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of the British naval hero, Vice Admiral the Viscount Horatio Nelson, on 21 October - the very same date of the famous naval battle.

To mark the occasion, the War, State Civilisations and Community Group of the Faculty of Arts in conjunction with the Centre for Maritime Policy held an all-day Trafalgar Day workshop to consider Trafalgar in its wider context.

Two panels of experts, including two serving naval officers, one from the Royal Australian Navy and one from the New Zealand navy, put their telescopes to their eyes to consider the lessons of this historic event.

Panel one examined a broad historical examination of Trafalgar from the vantage point of two centuries while panel two examined the Pax Britannica, the Pax Americana and the struggle to achieve sea control and maintain peace on the World Ocean.

Participating in the Trafalgar Day workshop at UOW are (from left): Ms Sheila Dwyer (PhD student, School of History & Politics); Dr Peter Sales (School of History & Politics); LEUT. Desmond Woods (RAN, Royal Australian Naval College); Associate Professor Gregory Rose (Faculty of Law); Dr Chris Rahman (Centre for Maritime Policy) and LEUT. COMMANDER David Chessum (Royal New Zealand Navy). The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton (standing next to Dr Sales) welcomed workshop attendees
