Graduate School of Medicine hosts information sessions
Jan 18, 2006
Prospective students interested in pursuing a career in medicine had the opportunity to attend an Information Session at the University of Wollongong last night (Tuesday 17 January), designed to equip applicants with the information they will need to apply to UOW’s Graduate School of Medicine (GSM). It was a very positive turn-out with over 150 prospective students attending the session as well as 20 General Practitioners associated with the GSM from the local area. Another session will be held at UOW's Shoalhaven Campus tomorrow night (Thursday 19 January). The GSM is currently undergoing accreditation from the Australian Medical Council for a graduate entry-level medical degree designed to produce excellent medical practitioners who have the capacity and desire to contribute to the enhancement of health care for patients in all geographic settings, but particularly in regional, rural and remote communities. Foundation Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine, Professor John Hogg, said the information sessions would provide prospective applicants with details and advice about studying a medical degree at UOW. “The Medical School was founded for a number of reasons, one of the most important being the chance to offer more doctors and opportunities to regional, rural and remote Australia,” he said. “The information sessions outline to the Illawarra and Shoalhaven what these opportunities are and provide assistance to those interested in a career in medicine.” Attendees at the session were able to gain detailed information on the School and its curriculum, the admission process, important dates for applications and the GAMSAT exam (the main admission test for all Medical Schools) which closes at the end of this month. The Medical School’s objectives were outlined as well as how its mission will be achieved through an outcomes-focussed, clinically-guided curriculum that is complemented by clinical skills laboratory instructional experiences, and the provision of community-based, clinically-focused educational opportunities. Such opportunities will include placements in general practice and specialists’ surgeries, large and small hospitals, and community agencies. Prospective students also received a presentation from a local GP and had the opportunity to speak with clinicians and other staff from UOW’s Graduate School of Medicine. Information Session at Shoalhaven Campus: Thursday 19 January from 6.30 – 8.30pm in the Main Lecture Theatre in the Ray Cleary Building. (Parking available in front of building) Bookings for the final session are essential. Please call 1300 367 869 or e-mail uniadvice@uow.edu.au to reserve a place.
