Students visit UOW for a Siemens Science Experience

Jan 23, 2006

Cool Physics, Chemistry Chaos, Rock Solid, Maggots and Murder.

These are just a few of the activities that were available to students when the University of Wollongong conducted the Siemens Science Experience last week (January 17-19, 2006) - a fun and informative science education program that involves three days of hands-on science activities for students entering Year 10 in 2006.

The science program, managed nationally by the Science Schools Foundation Inc. and sponsored by Siemens Ltd., aims to introduce students to as many aspects of science, engineering and technology studies at UOW as possible, with the hope that students will continue these studies at high school and eventually at university.

The program is hosted at 31 sites around Australia and highlights the exciting range of career opportunities open to students with science training.

The program included activities such as measuring the temperature of absolute zero, examining chemical creations and studying nanotechnology. Students attended short lectures and took part in experiments in UOW laboratories, and were given the chance to visit the Wollongong Science Centre and Planetarium and BlueScope Steel.

Over 55 students travelled from all over NSW to attend the event and had the chance to meet and interact with other interested science students. The students were also be treated to a dinner hosted by the Corrimal Rotary Club.

Participating in the Maggots and Murder session are Stephanie Gould (Nowra High School) and Rizwan Nawaz (Randiwkc Boys High)

Exploring the possibilities with blue slime were Aimee Bennett (The Illawarra Senior College), Chris Finlayson (Sutherland Shire Christian School) and UOW PhD Chemistry student, Ann Mills

Stephanie Carrigan (Smith's Hill) and Ronni Maciejowski (St Mary's High School) are pictured using test tubes and bunsen burners with UOW Chemistry Lecturer, Dr Glennys O'Brien
