Showcase of Excellence attracts record numbers

Over 140 high school careers advisers from schools across NSW and the ACT converged on the University of Wollongong on Friday 24 March to attend the annual 'Showcase of Excellence'. The event, hosted by Vice-Principal (Administration) Mr Chris Grange, involved a series of presentations from executive and academic staff on changes and 'breaking news' at UOW and within the tertiary sector, research excellence and strengths, marketing and school liaison activities and student opportunities. This year record numbers attended the event to be updated on the latest happenings and achievements at UOW. The first speaker was Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Lee Astheimer, who detailed the major research centres at UOW and explained how the involvement of modern researchers as undergraduate lecturers enrich the degree programs. Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Rob Castle, delivered a presentation on Excellence in Tertiary Education including tertiary changes and new degrees on offer at UOW. Foundation Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine, Professor John Hogg, delivered 'breaking news' on the new Medical School. He provided details on the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) curriculum and admission requirements, particularly discussing how students can prepare themselves for a career in medicine and the transition path for undergraduate students. Dr Chris Turney from the School of Earth and Environmental Science delivered a presentation on Excellence in Science and spoke about 'dating middle earth'. He spoke about the age of the Flores 'hobbits' (Homo floresiensis) and the implications for human evolution and migration. Dr Gary Noble spoke about Excellence in Commerce, specifically a new research and internationalisation subject available to undergraduate Commerce students. Pioneer students of the subject, Charmaine Jennings and Katrina Matus, spoke about the subject and their experiences in Dubai. Other speakers included National Marketing Manager, Ms Emily Christofides, and students from the faculties of Law, Arts and Science.
