Future UOW leaders meet the professionals
Oct 20, 2006
Networking group Junior Chamber International Illawarra (JCII) recently held its second 'Meet the Professionals' seminar of the year at the University of Wollongong - an event that aims to connect students with professionals from their study field. JCII is a networking group aimed at building professional and interpersonal skills for its members, and an important element to this is to contribute to, and work with, the community. This event was aimed at students studying in the information technology and communication field through the Faculty of Informatics and was designed to help them understand and appreciate the opportunities in the Illawarra region. Professionals from a range of organisations attended the event including Accent, Computing Science Australia: Computer Science Corporation, Consultant Engineering, Didymo Designs IT, ILB Computing, InfoComp, Omnidrive and Yuranga.
Guest recruiter for the event was Fiona Gallacher from Edmen Group who provided students with practical and useful tips on how to be successful as a graduate job applicant.
The event was supported and sponsored by UOW's Faculty of Informatics and the Illawarra Area Consultative Committe. Project Co-ordinator and UOW Management Cadet, Jessica Saad, said feedback from professionals and students about the event was overwhelmingly positive. "One student told me she had more confidence to seek a job now than when she first walked into the event and many students said it was the most useful way to learn about their industry," she said. "The students really liked that they got to interact as a group and one-on-one with professionals. It was also great to have the Dean of the Faculty of Informatics, Professor Joe Chicharo, speak and have the faculty heads support the event."
