Awards to educators on World Teachers’ Day
Nov 03, 2006
Seven academics from the University of Wollongong were among teachers honoured recently on World Teachers’ Day – a day inaugurated by UNESCO in 1994 to focus attention on the extraordinary contributions and achievements of teachers. In line with this special day, the Illawarra/South Coast Branch of the Australian College of Educators presented “Peer Recognition Teaching Awards” at the University of Wollongong (UOW). The branch president, Dr Garry Hoban, of UOW’s Faculty of Education said the college represented teachers at all levels – early childhood, schools, TAFE and University. A total of 27 awards were presented with seven going to UOW academics and the remainder to a variety of educational workplaces. Dr Hoban said the “Peer Recognition Teaching Awards” were intended to recognise teachers who regularly go “above and beyond the call of duty” and display passion, commitment and enthusiasm in their profession. The Dean of the Faculty of Education at UOW, Professor Barry Harper, presented some of the awards as well as educational leaders from the Catholic Education Office and the Department of Education and Training. “The presentation of these awards is a representation of an ongoing collaboration between the Faculty of Education, schools, TAFE and early childhood centres,” Dr Hoban said.
