UOW staff get hairy for 'Movember'

Dec 08, 2006

November at the University of Wollongong became 'Movember' recently when a number of staff decided to 'bring back the mo' to raise awareness of men's health issues.

Wollongong UniAdvice raised almost $100 at a morning tea event after colleagues Jonathan Barker, Graham Smith and Peter Murray grew moustaches for charity. The aim of 'Movember' is to change attitudes about men's health issues.

Interesting facts:

* Men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy of males is 6 years less than females

* Every year in Australia 2,700 men die of prostate cancer – more than the number of women who die from breast cancer

* Depression affects one in six men and most don’t seek help. Untreated depression is a leading risk factor for suicide. Rates of suicide are more than double the national road toll
