UOW's UniCentre awarded for excellence

Dec 12, 2006

The University of Wollongong's UniCentre has received two prestigious awards at the annual Australasian Campus Union Managers’ Association (ACUMA) Awards for Excellence.

The UniCentre provides UOW students with services and facilities on campus such as entertainment, skills and training, health care, retail outlets and food courts etc.

The ACUMA awards for excellence are an annual awards program designed to recognise excellence in the design, production and implementation of the marketing of services and products.

The ACUMA awards also act as a showcase of skills, talent and innovative approaches to issues that face campus services especially in the post Voluntary Student Union Fee environment.

The UniCentre received the Award for Excellence in the category of Promotional Poster for the UniShop's “Need a Good Read” campaign and an Award for Excellence for the Email Newsletter “What’s On”.

The “Need a Good Read” Campaign is a rebranding initiative to build the profile of the University of Wollongong’s on campus bookstore UniShop in the three areas of trade – bookstore, retail and newsagency. Traditionally serving the campus market, the campaign is to promote the new approach of targeting the general public.

“What’s On” is a weekly e-newsletter distributed to close to 20,000 students offering a definitive guide to what is happening on campus. It has proven to be an effective method of direct communication with the students and contains information about on campus events, activities, university initiatives and other quirky news. The e-newsletter is also an excellent mechanism for corporate sponsorship.

“Awards at this level recognise the valuable facilities and service that campus service organisations provide to the student population,” said UniCentre Marketing Manager, Monica Millar.

“It is evident that in a post VSU environment, the UniCentre is well on the way to embracing this new direction of commercial activity.

"This new direction will help to generate income in the future as well as open the door of opportunity for other organisations wishing to join in partnership with UniCentre to access this captive market.”
