Maths think tank to target industry problems
Feb 06, 2007
More than 100 mathematical and statistical experts have begun a week-long workshop at the University of Wollongong with companies being the main beneficiaries of the think tank. The overseas and Australian delegates will collectively pool their talents to solve six problems put forward by the companies such as BlueScope Steel Research, Integral Energy, Trading Technology Australia, Defence Science Technology Organisation (DSTO), Transpower NZ/ Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority of New Zealand. The workshop has been organised by Associate Professor Tim Marchant and Dr Maureen Edwards from UOW's Institute of Mathematics and Applied Statistics. Professor Marchant said Illawarra businesses and UOW students were welcome to attend any of the sessions. Some school students from St Mary's will be in attendance. "There is a strong electricity industry theme this year to the workshop," Professor Marchant said.
