New deadline for inaugural awards to reward community service
27 Jul 2007 | Bernie Goldie
Community service is being celebrated at the University of Wollongong in 2007 with the Chancellor’s Awards for Achievement in Community Service.
Nominations for these special awards have been extended to a new closing date of Friday 3 August.
“The University has a special relationship with its community,” said the Chancellor of the University of Wollongong, Mr Michael Codd AC, when launching the awards.
“The community has always been supportive of the University and, in turn, the University works hard to repay the support and faith our community demonstrates in us.
“There are countless volunteers who dedicate their time and expertise to the University, contributing to its success. This award recognises the value of community service and the importance the University places on it,” he said.
These awards recognise the many and varied ways people are acting to support the University and the community. For instance those people working to create opportunities for students to combine learning and community service through internships or participating in community improvement projects; those creating new research and consultation opportunities and those acquiring grant funds or other acquisitions for the University.
They also recognise the service activity of individuals and groups in the local community. In addition, UOW alumni are working tirelessly to enrich their local communities through voluntary community service. These awards recognise and reward this important role they are playing in enriching their communities.
The awards have been established to recognise achievement in community service and highlight the personal contributions that UOW graduates and others make to the enrichment of their community and advancement of society.
There are two award categories, each carrying a monetary prize of $2,000, one for alumni (graduates) of UOW who have contributed significantly to the community and/or University and the other for general community members or groups who have contributed significantly to the University and the community.
The awards will be presented at a special event to recognise the University’s volunteers to be held in October 2007.
Nomination Forms and guidelines for the Chancellor’s Awards for Achievement in Community Service are available on the University’s website at http://www.uow.edu.au/about/community/chancellorsaward/index.html
