Wollongong hosts inaugural Universities Australia meeting on future directions
27 Aug 2007 | Bernie Goldie
Universities Australia held its inaugural annual workshop and first plenary meeting in Wollongong over 26-27 August hosted by the University of Wollongong.
Universities Australia Chair Professor Gerard Sutton said that the primary focus of the two-day event was the development of Universities Australia’s advocacy strategies for higher education in the interest of all Australians.
The workshop also provided the opportunity for Universities Australia members to meet informally with a number of eminent external people to discuss major issues facing the sector in the current political context, Professor Sutton said.
Topics for the 26 August workshop focused on the 2007 federal election, methods to promote diversity in universities and developing broad-based advocacy for Universities Australia as well as a discussion on the desirability or otherwise of an Australian Tertiary Education Commission.
The agenda for the business plenary session today (27 August) included the Higher Education Endowment Fund, a scoping study on participation and equity in universities, implementation of the Research Quality Framework and the Indigenous Higher Education Advisory Council (IHEAC) Indigenous Education Conference.
