Halpern Lecture focuses on climate system
31 Aug 2007 | Bernie Goldie
The annual public Bert Halpern Lecture was delivered last night (30 August) by CSIRO scientist, Dr Greg Ayers, who examined the effects of various activities on the climate system.
Dr Ayers is Chief of CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research and his talk was entitled “Chemistry in the Climate System”.
The Halpern Lecture is delivered by a distinguished visiting scientist on a subject in chemistry or biochemistry. The lecture honours the memory of Bert Halpern, the Professor of Chemistry at the University of Wollongong from 1970-80 whose pioneering studies in amino acid, peptide and protein chemistry had a major impact across the fields of medicine, biochemistry, chemistry and geochemistry.
Among Bert Halpern’s notable achievements was the development of novel techniques for the diagnosis and study of metabolic disorders and generic defects.
Dr Ayers has made significant contributions to higher education in atmospheric sciences. In 1995, he was awarded the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society’s Priestley Medal.
UOW’s Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Lee Astheimer, introduced the speaker to last night’s audience at the UniCentre Function Rooms.
The School of Chemistry student prize presentations were held ahead of the lecture.
