Dr Karl Kruszelnicki guest speaker at inaugural black and white ball

3 Sep 2007 | Renee Criddle

Renowned science commentator and University of Wollongong graduate, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, joined over 200 students from university accommodation and UOW staff last week (Friday 31 August) to attend the inaugural Black and White Combined Residences Formal.

The ball was held at the University Hall and organised by students from Weerona College, Kooloobong, International House, Keiraview and Campus East.

Students on the organising committee included Jason Michael (Weerona College), Tara Alcorn (Kooloobong), Pam Frost (Kooloobong), Will Staples (Weerona College), Oliver Burnett (International House), Michael Tokich (Keiraview) and Amy Pagett (Campus East).

Over drinks and canapés, guests were entertained by spectacular fire twirlers on the lawn and after dinner, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki presented “Great Moments in Science”.

With some amazing footage, fascinating facts and anecdotes, Dr Kruszelnicki kept the audience enthralled with his infectious enthusiasm for science.

Dr Kruszelnicki has degrees in physics, mathematics, biomedical engineering, medicine and surgery and has lent his scientific expertise regularly to The Midday Show and Good Morning Australia and Channel 7's Sunrise.

He has worked as a physicist, labourer, car mechanic, filmmaker, hospital scientific officer, TV weatherman, medical doctor at The Kids Hospital in Sydney and as a biomedical engineer where he designed and built a machine to pick up electrical signals from the human retina.

Following Dr Karl’s presentation, dancers from ‘Dancing with Stars’ took to the stage with a combination of tango and Latin dance.
