Commerce and Creative Arts team up for GLEAN

The University of Wollongong’s Faculties of Commerce and Creative Arts have joined forces to bring the Illawarra community GLEAN – an exhibition that asks people to think differently about their relationship with planet Earth.

The exhibition was officially opened yesterday (Wednesday 5 September) by the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Professor Shirley Leitch, and Professor Diana Wood Conroy from the Faculty of Creative Arts.

The opening, which attracted almost 50 guests, also featured a short presentation by New Zealand artist Susie Pratt.

Susie Pratt highlights the coercive natural imagery used to sell packaged goods – the bubbling brook on the detergent bottle, the dolphin on the laundry powder – and invites us to live more eco-effectively.

The Faculty of Commerce chose to sponsor this artist and her strong sustainability message because it says it is committed to inspiring more socially innovative forms of commerce.

The faculty believes artists can open up new ways of looking at issues such as “our growing ecological footprint that we can explore in our research and in the classroom”.

The faculty says its goal is to enhance the role of business as a positive force in society.

The exhibition consists of animations – such as the video ‘Spring Sensations Over the Atlantic’ – paintings, prints and artists’ books.

GLEAN will be on exhibit until Friday 14 September.
