UOW to host inaugural student leadership conference

11 Sep 2007 | Bernie Goldie

The University of Wollongong is set to host the first Students 4 Students National Leadership Conference (S4S NLC) at the end of this month.

The conference, to be held during recess from September 23-26, has been organised by a group of third year UOW Black Opal students, and aims to bring together over 150 tertiary students from around Australia to explore the concept of leadership.

The three-day event will include high profile keynote speakers, workshops, community service, a charity masquerade ball, outdoor film night, jazz in the park, a hike to Mt Keira, morning yoga and brekkie on the beach.

Erin Gleeson, third year BA/BCM student and chairperson of the organising committee said the conference was the first of its kind in Australia.

“Our conference is unique in that it’s completely organised by students, so we have a fair idea of what students want from a conference like this,” she said.

“We’ve organised some amazing professional keynote speakers and workshops which will feature topics that students can relate to their own experience, yet we’ve also included a lot of social-type events to prove that you can explore issues relevant to leadership and still have fun while you’re doing it.”

One of the highlights of the conference will be the charity masquerade dinner, which will be held at The Lagoon Restaurant on the evening of Tuesday 25 September.

The S4S organising committee has confirmed Brian Egan, founder of Aussie Helpers Australia (as seen on ABC-TV’s Australian Story), as the keynote speaker for the evening, with all proceeds going towards his charity.

“We’re really excited about our keynote speakers for the conference -- Brian Egan, Shanaka Fernando, Aaron Caldwell and all of our keynotes have such inspirational stories that attendees will really gain a lot from hearing about their journeys,” said Erin.

Registration for the conference is available on the conference website, http://www.uow.edu.au/conferences/student_leadership. Students who register before 5pm Tuesday September 11 will also go in the draw to win a free skydive over North Wollongong Beach.

Members of the wider community are also encouraged to purchase a ticket to the Charity Masquerade Ball at the Lagoon Restaurant to assist in raising funds for Aussie Helpers – organisers say that with so many peoples lives touched by the drought it is a great way to support the cause.
