Black Opal to launch ‘Chain of Empowerment’
11 Sep 2007 | Bernie Goldie
A University of Wollongong Black Opal Phase One team is launching ‘Chain of Empowerment’ on Wednesday 19 September which is a campaign addressing the issue of youth homelessness in the Illawarra.
The initiative aims to raise awareness of a service offered by Wollongong’s Southern Youth and Family Services, called CHAIN – Community Health For Adolescents In Need – a non-for-profit health organisation providing adolescents in need with important services such as counselling, health programs, facilities, and youth resources.
The Black Opal team will be initiating donation drives to be held throughout the Illawarra to enable the local community to participate in the Chain of Empowerment, and help to equip CHAIN with resources to meet the needs of the adolescents in crisis.
The community is being asked to contribute clothing, blankets, cans of food and toiletries. Black donation crates will be placed around the University of Wollongong’s grounds to facilitate the giving of tangible items by university students.
In conjunction with the donations, a fair day will be held on Wednesday September 19, on the grounds of the University to increase understanding and recognition of CHAIN.
Black Opal is a leadership program, organised through the University of Wollongong, designed to provide students with opportunities to acquire and strengthen leadership skills through a range of community-related activities. Participants are challenged to become exceptional leaders within their local communities and the wider society.
