Illawarra based Liberal Senator, Concetta Fierravanti-Wells today (5 October) announced that the University of Wollongong will receive $2.46 million in funding for three projects that will play an important role in enhancing facilities and services for students, staff and the local community.
The Federal Government will provide $2 million for the Village Green-Oval Development project under the Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) Transition Fund for Sporting and Recreational Facilities. The grant will fund the redevelopment of the main oval and surrounding precinct in order to create an environmentally effective and flexible outdoor sporting facility. The precinct will provide improved usage to the University, local schools and both sporting and non-sporting groups.
The Federal Government will also provide $460,455 for two projects under the Support for Small Businesses on Regional University Campuses Program.
The Internet Services Project will enable the university to establish an integrated group of internet cafes at key locations across the campus and university residences. This service will be particularly helpful to students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds that do not have online access at home. The Library Café project will support the establishment of a coffee/snacks operation within the Library precinct. The café will match the Library’s opening hours, providing late evening and weekend access for both staff and students.
Senator Fierravanti-Wells said that a total of 34 projects have been approved nationwide under these programs, contributing over $31 million to the higher education sector for better student facilities.
She said the programs were introduced to assist universities adjust to the changed funding environment by facilitating a shift from reliance on compulsory fees to other mechanisms, including partnerships with the community, working with local businesses and fee for service arrangements.
