11 Oct 2007 | Renee Criddle
Ross Tapsell, a PhD researcher in the School of History and Politics and CAPSTRANS (the Centre for Asia Pacific Social Transformation Studies), has been chosen to participate in the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program.
During a visit to Indonesia in January this year by the Board of the Australia-Indonesia Institute (AII), the Australian Ambassador in Jakarta, Mr Bill Farmer, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indonesian Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sport to continue one of the AII’s most successful programs – the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP).
In May this year, they invited applications from young people aged between 21 and 25 years, willing to represent Australia for two months in Indonesia during December 2007 and January 2008 as members of the AIYEP program.
The program aims to provide wider opportunities for young people from Indonesia and Australia to appreciate the culture, development and way of life of each other's country.
Ross, who has been learning the Indonesian language, said he was excited to be selected.
He said the trip would be prove a tremendous boost to his studies as his PhD is focused on Australia-Indonesia relations.
He will a join a group departing for Jakarta on December 14. Ross will link up with other members of the group in Lombok and will remain in Indonesia until 10 February next year.
Meanwhile, an Indonesian group of students has recently arrived in Australia as part of the reciprocal arrangement.
