‘Voices of Children’ echoing across the globe

An international exhibition showcasing children’s photographic images will connect to even more countries next year.
The innovative research project was started by members of the Faculty of Education in 2005 and involves children capturing images of their everyday experience using disposable cameras.
Children also then write a short piece about the photos they have taken. Selected photographs are then converted to large-scale images for exhibition in frames, montages or in over-head projector displays.
Originally funded by a UIC University international links grant, the project has grown to include collaborations in eleven international locations.
Dr Pauline Lsysaght, Associate Professor Ian Brown and Ros Westbrook from the Faculty of Education have been continuing to work with a number of universities from all over the world and have now added Greece and Nova Scotia to their list of participating countries.
“The initial phase of the project involved children from Australia, Zambia, USA, Samoa, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand,” said Professor Brown.
“In 2008, exhibitions will be held in conjunction with the Panteion University Athens and in Nova Scotia supported by the Xstrata Coal Mining group.”
“An exhibition will also be held in mainland China in collaboration with the Hong Kong Institute of Education.”
Currently children in Afghanistan, Mexico, Brazil, New Zealand and Guatemala are snapping images to contribute to exhibitions in 2009.
A number of collaborative research papers have been developed and presented internationally as a result of this initiative.
