The 2007 Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year Winner, Arron Wood, was the guest speaker at an innovative science program held at the University of Wollongong yesterday (Monday 29 October).
The Illawarra Coal Regional Science Fair is aimed at improving the ways in which science and technology are taught in schools. It is also an opportunity for primary and high school students from the South Coast, Illawarra, Southern Sydney, Campbelltown and Southern Highlands to research a topic of interest and showcase their findings to expert judges from across Sydney and Wollongong.
Over 250 high-school students displayed the results of their own open-ended investigations to experts and the public at the Fair. Research topics on display in the University Hall included insulation in houses, stain remover, tricking the brain, music and mental ability, weeping onions and left vs right side of the body and chemical carrots.
The annual Fair is an initiative of the Australian School Innovation in Science, Technology and Mathematics (ASISTM) project, which was announced last year by the Minster for Education, Science and Training, Julie Bishop.
A total of $33.7 million in funding was announced to cluster initiatives throughout Australia. Ms Bishop said the initiative is part of the Australian Government’s commitment to ensure Australia can build upon its scientific and technological capabilities.
Sponsors of the Fair included Illawarra Coal (principal sponsor), DET, UOW’s Faculty of Science, Pfizer Australia, ANSTO, The Illawarra Mercury, BlueScope Steel and Mister Ply & Wood.
