Shoalhaven Campus academic appointed President of International Society for Occupational Science
6 Nov 2007 | Bernie Goldie
Dr Alison Wicks, Director of the Australasian Occupational Science Centre (AOSC) at UOW’s Shoalhaven Campus, has been elected President of the International Society for Occupational Science (ISOS). The position involves chairing the new ISOS Board.
The mission of ISOS is to facilitate a world-wide network of individuals and institutions committed to research and education on occupation and to promoting occupation for health and community development.
Dr Wicks has been involved in occupational science at an international level for eight years. She played a leading role in establishing ISOS in 1999 and then took on the role of Executive Assistant.
In 2006, she convened the Inaugural International Occupational Science Think Tank which was hosted by AOSC at the Shoalhaven Campus. Twenty occupational scientists from 10 countries participated in the Think Tank.
The University of Southern California in Los Angeles subsequently recruited Dr Wicks as an international fellow to organise a second International Think Tank in April 2007 for 27 occupational scientists from 14 countries.
The aim of the second think thank was to restructure ISOS. She was elected Chair of an interim board to develop a new strategic plan for ISOS. After the launch of the new plan, Dr Wicks was elected ISOS president for three years to lead the way forward.
Dr Wicks has been a teacher in the USA and New Zealand as well as a visiting scholar in Ireland, England, Canada, and several US states. In December, she will be the keynote speaker at the Japanese Occupational Science Seminar.
