Budding historians flock to campus
15 Nov 2007 | Renee Criddle
The University of Wollongong's School of History and Politics welcomed almost 200 high-school students to the campus yesterday (Wednesday 14 November) who have chosen to take the History Extension subject for their Higher School Certificate.
Part of this high-school subject involves a large research project and as it would be the first time most of the students would have had to undertake such a task, UOW’s School of History and Politics held its HSC History Extension Seminar to provide students with advice and information.
"We wanted to infuse students with a range of ideas on what they could research as well as give them an opportunity to discuss it with their peers and also seek advice from UOW academics," said Senior Lecturer, Dr Glen Mitchell.
"Plus these students could be potential UOW students and we really wanted to show them how exciting and interesting the study of history can be."
Students came from the Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Highlands and Sutherland Shire to attend the workshop and were also treated to a BBQ on the Duck Pond lawn and a jazz band performance as part of the well-received event.
