Minister for the Illawarra David Campbell and Member for Wollongong Noreen Hay today (Friday 16 November) announced a joint education initiative involving the University of Wollongong (UOW) and TAFE NSW which will deliver a $20 million Multimedia and Design Training Centre.
Mr Campbell and Ms Hay joined Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) Professor Rob Castle and TAFE Illawarra Institute Director Dianne Murray to outline plans for the latest project to begin at the Innovation Campus.
Mr Campbell said the State Government had committed $4.8 million to the new facility which will provide a specialised recording and sound stage area, computer laboratories, a foyer display area for student works including virtual reality and audiovisual facilities, seminar rooms, as well as multimedia and design facilities.
He said the project would allow for improved pathways between vocational education and training, higher education and employment – and would enhance the already strong reputation of the Illawarra Institute as a provider of excellence in education and training outcomes.
“The Illawarra Institute will provide qualifications and services in direct response to the rapidly-growing multimedia and design work of local, national and international enterprises,” Mr Campbell said.
The Minister said the centre was part of the Innovation Campus which has received funding from the NSW Government to support UOW attract innovative businesses and research investment to the region.
“The Innovation Campus is considered a landmark development for the 21st century,” he said.
Ms Hay also welcomed the announcement and the employment opportunities it would bring to the region.
“The Illawarra Institute and University of Wollongong have well established joint programs that have increased and improved education and employment opportunities for people in this region,” Ms Hay said.
She said the facility would further enhance the excellent, co-operative work of two leading educational providers.
“Programs offered by the Illawarra Institute through the new centre will address national skill shortages in the areas of multimedia and IT,” Ms Hay said.
