Sculpture honours late community activist

19 Nov 2007 | Bernie Goldie

The latest sculpture by Didier Balez from UOW’s Faculty of Creative Arts was recently unveiled in a reserve at Coledale in honour of the late Mike Dwyer.

The sculpture, Comradeship, was made in the sculpture studio at Creative Arts.

Mike Dwyer was widely admired as a teacher, community activist and trade union leader.

Mr Dwyer died aged 51 in 2000 after a long battle with cancer.

The Comradeship sculpture was unveiled by Wollongong Lord Mayor Cr Alex Darling. It is an artistic interpretation of the sloop built in Mr Dwyer’s backyard with the help of friends Dave Beswick and Peter Wilson.

The friends managed to sail the sloop on Lake Illawarra before Mr Dwyer’s death.
