Engineering holds Creative Design Competition

22 Nov 2007 | Renee Criddle

The Faculty of Engineering’s Creative Design Competition has been running for 37 years, and the projects just keep getting more interesting.

This year’s event featured an anti-slip ladder, fire liar, spirotight, bin lock, pipeameter and a fliptop bench.

The competition final attracted students, academics and the community who saw an eclectic display of creative thinking, innovation and design.

The projects were the end result of 1st year engineering students applying their skills to solving some very interesting problems.

Six groups of four were chosen as finalists from around 250 students.

The Creative Design prizes were sponsored by Bluescope Steel, Industrial Timber Services Pty Ltd, PHD Engineering, Spruson and Ferguson, the Illawarra and Sutherland Regional Group of the Institution of Engineers Australia and UOW’s Faculty of Engineering.

The Overall Winner was awarded to the Pipeameter design.

Peoples Choice Award: Bin Lock

Best Model Award: Fliptop Bench

Best Oral Presentation: Pipeameter

Best Technical Solution: Fire Liar

Most Patentable Device: Fliptop Bench
