Magazine named top national student publication
26 Nov 2007 | Nick Hartgerink
The University of Wollongong magazine Paper Rock has been named the best student publication of the year at the annual meeting of the Australian Journalism Educators.
The magazine took out the coveted Dr Charles Stuart prize for best student publication in a highly competitive field of magazines, newspapers and online publications produced by over 20 of Australia and New Zealand’s top journalism courses.
Paper Rock was also named best occasional student publication at the award, presented on 23 November.
The Features Editor of Brisbane Courier-Mail who judged the category, described the publication as a “top-class magazine.”
“The format and design make Paper Rock a pleasure…this publication really hits the mark,” he said.
Paper, Rock was the brainchild of final year journalism students Ben Morgan, Donna Kilby and Sarah Lucre who wanted to put their journalism skills to the test.
“Ben, Donna and Sarah can justly be proud of a great achievement. They came up with the idea for Paper, Rock and worked really hard to make it a reality,” said Journalism lecturer Marcus O’Donnell.
Mr O’ Donnell said that that the award also bodes well for the new Bachelor of Journalism course launched this year at UOW.
“We were pretty chuffed to take out this award against competition from much bigger and much more older journalism schools around the country,” O’Donnell said.
The annual awards known as the “Ossies” named after journalist Osmar S. White, are organised by the JEA and judged by media executives in Australia and New Zealand.
Prizes are awarded in 15 categories for news and feature writing, current affairs reporting and student publications.
