ICIS photo presentation to Aboriginal Centre and Keeping Place
30 Nov 2007 | Renee Criddle
A presentation ceremony this week marked how the University of Wollongong's international students are continuing to build cultural links with the region's Indigenous community.
UOW's Illawarra Committee for International Students (ICIS) presented a collage of photos to the Illawarra Aboriginal Centre and Keeping Place in Kenny Street, Wollongong.
The photos were taken during visits by the international students each Wednesday since June this year.
ICIS sends selected international students to visit the centre as part of a program to promote cross-cultural understanding and social activities.
The students have enjoyed didgeridoo performances and explanations about Aboriginal hunting instruments, while the students have reciprocated with various demonstrations including examples of their homeland cooking.
ICIS is an organisation funded by UOW to provide assistance and support to international students and to enrich their time at university. Activities include English conversation classes, day trips, bushwalks and other activities.
ICIS also provides financial advice on issues such as renting properties, buying vehicles and fair trading legislation. Another important activity is the International Friendship Program, which links international students with members of the Wollongong community for the purpose of cross-cultural friendship.
Last year, ICIS celebrated 21 years of service and support to international students on campus.
