Moss Vale Education Centre conducted its first graduation celebration in its new building on 11 December.
And it was not the only first for the centre as Ian Floyd now holds the honour of being the first Dean’s Scholar.
As well, a number of Arts students who graduated last year will next week officially be receiving their graduate diplomas making them the first to leave the Moss Education Centre to become teachers. The centre was established in 2002 with about 24 students and now boasts about 100.
Among addresses presented at the celebration was one from the former CEO of William Collins Publishing Australia and New Zealand. He spoke on the importance of lifelong learning. Strongly interested in literature and education, Mr Wilder became a mature aged student and graduated with a diploma in Italian and French languages and literature.
Nadia Verrucci presented a congratulatory address to the students. As well as being sub dean in the Faculty of Commerce, Nadia has particular responsibilities for the Shoalhaven Campus and other education centres. In addition, as a lecturer in microeconomics she has taught many students at the satellite campuses.
Dr Helen McCue presented the Occasional Address on the topic “Education as the Corner Stone of Community Development”. Dr McCue is a Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Contemporary Islam at the University of Melbourne.
Following work as a nurse consultant with the United Nations World Health Organisation in the Middle East in the early 1980s, Dr McCue initiated and co-founded the trade union aid body Australian People for Health Education and Development Abroad in 1984. She also co-founded Rural Australians for Refugees in 2001 and initiated and was the founding Chairperson of the Wingecarribee Community Foundation.
Dr McCue worked as a Tutor at the Moss Vale Education Centre in 2002 and 2003.
Alana Atkinson spoke on behalf of the graduating students.
