Noel’s life-saving efforts recognised by Mercury

17 Dec 2007 | Bernie Goldie

It was a bittersweet win for UOW’s Noel Broadhead when he and his family were named the Illawarra Mercury People of 2007.

Noel and Danielle Broadhead lost their daughter Isabelle, 3, in a car accident on Cordeaux Road, Mt Kembla, in 2006.

Her death prompted the family to start a campaign for national laws, likely to be enacted early next year, to ensure children are properly restrained in cars.

Noel works in the Enterprise Content Unit of UOW’s Academic Registrar’s Division.

He said he hoped the award would trigger as much publicity as possible to reinforce the point that children need to be properly restrained in cars especially as we head into the festive travelling season.

Noel said his family hoped to halve the figure of 500 children who are killed or seriously injured on Australian roads each year.

Danielle recently gave birth to a new baby boy, Mason, at Wollongong Hospital. The Broadheads have another young daughter, nine-year-old Madeleine.

    • Meanwhile, Professor Don Iverson was the recipient of The Mercury’s “Academic Award” for the key role he played in helping to establish the Graduate School of Medicine. The Mercury referred also to his work in the area of breast cancer research
