From the shelf life of wine to tsunami risk modelling . . .

A Mathematics and Statistics Industry Study Group conference being held at the University of Wollongong from 28 January to 1 February is investigating a range of topics including the shelf life of wine to tsunami risk modelling for Australia.

The former topic is being presented by Provisor/Food Sciences Australia and the latter by Geoscience Australia.

The Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Lee Astheimer, and the Director of the Mathematics and Industry Study Group, Associate Professor Tim Marchant, spoke at the official opening and welcome on Monday 28 January.

Among organisations attending the conference are Geoscience Australia, Integral Energy, New Zealand Steel, Provisor/Food Sciences Australia, Transpower New Zealand and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

One of the invited speakers (29 January) is Dr Andrew Fowler from the University of Limerick in Ireland and Oxford University in England, whose research interests cover a wide range of applications of mathematical modelling in the applied sciences including geophysics, biology and industrial problems. His talk is entitled “Freckles, volcanoes and rivers: channelisations in the industrial and scientific world”.

Professor Jim Hill from UOW is also speaking on January 29. He is a renowned expert in the field of nanotechnology and his talk centres on applied mathematical modelling in nanotechnology.
