Students take up residence in new homes

19 Feb 2008 | Renee Criddle

Over 1300 University of Wollongong students moved into their new university residences on the weekend, coming from places as close as Sydney to as far away as Arabia.

Each of the UOW residences (Campus East, Weerona College, International House, Keiraview Accommodation, Graduate House, Gundi and Kooloobong) held comprehensive Orientation Programs for the new students, designed to welcome them to their new community and ease them into their new surroundings.

Activities such as movie nights, excursions to local sights, BBQs, trip to the beach and information session for parents and family members will be held throughout the year to ensure students a smooth transition.

“Students moving into residences will be experiencing a range of emotions from excitement to trepidation,” said General Manager of Accommodation Services, Michael Gillmore.

“For many students this is their first time living away from home and for students coming from other countries, there will be exciting differences that they will encounter.

“The emphasis is definitely on making new students feel welcome, assisting them with any moving in issues, and ensuring there are as many opportunities as possible to make friends, get to know their way around Wollongong and become part of the community.”

Staff and student leaders will be on hand to assist students this week with issues that range from homesickness to practical issues such as where to buy groceries.

And this support doesn’t simply stop at the end of Orientation Week. Strong developmental, academic and social support networks will be available to all students living at UOW throughout the year.

“This year we received a record number of applicants from students wanting to live at UOW, with an increase in applications from Australia and overseas,” said Mr Gillmore.

“We are very pleased to welcome our new and returning students and are looking forward to an exciting year ahead.”
